Historical Event on 1/4/1948
Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country. Apart from the Burmese, the main ethnic minority groups are the Karen, Shan, Mon, Chin, and Kachin. Just as the Burmese did against the British, almost all of these ethnic groups have struggled against the Burmese government for self-determination.

8/6/1925	Surendra Nath Banerjee died. He was one of the founders of mordern India and proponent of autonomy within the British Commonwealth. He was President of Indian National Congress twice, in 1895 at Pune and in 1902 at Ahmedabad.
5/19/1980	T. N. Raina, former General of India, passed away.
1/23/1996	Maharashtra govt. winds up the inquiry commission headed by Justice Srikrishna set up to probe the communal riots in Mumbai in Dec. 92-Jan. 93.
8/13/1638	Durgadas Rathore, social reformer, was born at Salwa.
9/25/1954	14 Members of Parliament (MP) form a new party called the Union of Socialist Progress. Acharya Kripalani is the leader.
12/11/1906	Mysore Gururaj Vijayasarathi, cricket Test umpire for 13 tests from 1951-60, was born in Karnataka.
